The sun was at the opposite end of the sky, and most of the afternoon clubs had just retired. The classes had ended long ago as well. Unfortunately for one student, the education seemed endless. Surrounded by large amounts of schoolwork and homework, it formed a barricade around her that even the strongest person in Ouran couldn't escape from.
They're serious, Michi thought with a dead-pan expression. She had to complete all of the work given from the beginning of the year up until that very moment. For the first time she longed for the comatose state she had been in at the hospital, anything would've been better than this! Then she recalled the words of her friend Kanae, a girl who was the same homeroom.
"I pity you, Michi-chan. You're going to get tons of schoolwork because we're in Class B. Class D hardly gets any work because most of the teachers have given up on them, and Class C just teaches at the average public school's level. Class B is for the students who fell short of Class A, a few of the more competitive kids have made attempts to beat them. They've all failed, of course, because... well, they're Class A."
"A war against classes," she mumbled with a small sweat-drop, stretching sore limbs to get ready for another hour of work. Did that mean she couldn't ask one of the smarter students for help? "$%@$."

It was getting late, the Host Club had only recently ended and Mitsukuni had taken off in search of his brother. This wasn't something that frequently occurred, the two cousins heading their separate ways after they'd finished their club duty. However, today it was necessary, as Takashi had received homework from a subject he was slightly lacking in. Mathematics. It wasn't that he didn't understand it, his mind just tended to drift off after looking at all those numbers for so long that he eventually forgot what it was about and had to start all over again. It was a slightly worrying habit, yet thankfully the family business didn't have much that involved the numeric science. And anything that did, he could always hire in an accountant. Or ask Kyouya to do it.
With gentle, as it was a library, yet purposeful steps, he walked by the many rows of books, searching for one with the formula's for advanced algebra. He planned on studying in here, the library being unusually quiet due to lack of students gossiping, so he'd have a quiet place to concentrate. Takeshi had expected to see the books. He'd also expected to see the librarian flashing him a smile he wasn't quite sure of what to make of it, this being a common happening when the Host Club came here. He didn't expect to see a mountain of books stacked up rather dangerously on a, thankfully, sturdy table. He wasn't entirely sure as to which was more disturbing, the mass amounts of books and papers loitered around, or the rather colourful word the girl, surrounded by afore mentioned literary materials, had said. "Ah." Careful thinking had concluded the latter to be the winner, as he stood by the desk rather idly, blinking at the girl.

Not particularly good in any subject, Michi often had to spend hours studying daily to pass all subjects. Then she remembered. Schoolwork and homework was one thing, but there was probably a crap-load of tests and quizzes too. Steamed, her throat told her she might need some liquid courage to continue working or else she may lose her sanity. But she didn't bring any with her and doubted anyone would give alcohol to a minor. So she'd just sulk and deal with it.
Turning after hearing a small noise (she thought it might have been a mouse, but would Ouran High School really have those?), a rather tall guy was spotted. It was a good thing he was tall since the large amount of various papers and books blocked her face. "... Hi," she said, hoping he didn't hear her previous cuss. "Uh, I'm sorry but the librarian just left..."
She couldn't recall having any skills as a librarian, but still. He obviously came to the library for something, even if it was just relaxing. The blond made a small gesture to herself, but accidentally tipped a few books over with her elbow. She caught a few because of reflexes, but the majority from that stack merely fell to the floor. Hopefully it wasn't anything expensive. "I... I-Is there anything I can help you with?" she slurred out, still rattled by the sudden noises that destroyed the silence.

"Ah."He tilted his head slightly, barely able to see her over the books. He would have said that he wasn't looking for the librarian, he knew very well where the book he was looking for was, having borrowed it so many times before, but as he went to speak, a dozen books began to tumble from the tower. He quickly took a step back, should any of the books hit his feet, while he stuck out his hands, grabbing a few of the older looking ones. As the noise had subdued, the giant library had let it echo back a forth a few times, he gently placed the books he'd saved onto the table, before bending down and collecting the others. "Hm." He answered he question with a small smile, holding up one of the fallen books. 'Algebra; Advanced Study' was written in bold letters, it was the only book that he did not return to the table. He was rather curious as to why a freshman would require such a book. Surely they were nowhere near this chapter yet? "May I?" His voice was hushed, this being a library, but also from lack of use. His cousin had been energetic enough for half a dozen people today, which left him with just having to nod as the small boy talked the ears off of those that dared listen.

The guy had caught the books that looked a little more worn, making her sigh in relief. Michi bowed from where she sat, careful not to knock anything else off of the table. "Uh, thank you." She said while chuckling nervously. "That would've been a problem."
He didn't really answer, making her wonder whether he was the 'thinking type'. A lot of the men attending Ouran looked to be the type to keep their thoughts inside, while the girls... she shivered, not even able to describe the females attending the private academy. He made a noise, so soft she had to strain her ears to hear it. A gentle giant, she pondered.
"Of course." Again her ears strained to catch his next question, but luckily he spoke a little louder than before. She was stuck on science homework and not even likely to get to the math homework that day. Class C students and below didn't even talk about algebra, so she wondered why he took the math book. Stalling, she could barely catch his face but her eyes were large and hopeful. "... When you're done, would you mind helping me?"

Takashi smiled, giving a nod. Most students wouldn't even notice if the books were damaged, but the librarian took he pride in keeping them in good condition and so he'd respect that. Besides, these things held knowledge, something that deserved to be treated with utmost care. The way she seemed to lean forward as he spoke, had him ponder he odd behaviour. As he realized it was due to his volume of speaking did he give a curt bow, speaking an octave higher than he had before "Gomen nasai.".
Nodding again, a thanks this time, he held the book in one hand and was about to turn to leave when her eyes made him stop. He could see the question before she asked. "Ah. Science?" He asked as he moved to the chair next to her. He didn't really need to ask, as he could easily make out the subject from her textbooks. So she'd said 'When you're done', but Takashi knew himself all too well and would most likely not be done in time to help her. He could always study at home, he told himself. Mitsukuni would most probably give him a hand too, even if he didn't wish to trouble his cousin. But he couldn't leave the girl here without any help.

"...What? Why're you apologizing?" Michi asked. Most guys weren't so self-conscious. At least, that was what she thought. Maybe he had heard her swearing? He had, hadn't he? That was pretty embarrassing. She decided to try explaining. "I'm sorry, but please believe me. I have good kokan*, though probably not as good as yours."
She wondered idly if the wrong word had been used, but decided it was close enough. The correct word wasn't coming to her either. And apparently the other student was intelligent as well, since he practically read the question from her as if she had subtitles over her head. He even bothered to help before doing his own work, which she assumed he had plenty of. She smiled slightly. "Thanks, but I didn't know I was such an open book."
"What's your name?" She asked, almost sounding impolite until she realized her mistake. "Oh. I mean, uh... I'm Michi. What's your name?"
(*Kokan means crotch. She meant to say koken, which means moral character.)

Takashi blinked as she questioned his apology. He thought it had been quite obvious as to why. He was deciding words that could explain it clearly, yet blinked as the girl spoke. "...Kokan?" He tilted his head slightly, a minuscule frown on his face as he struggled to grasp what she'd meant by it. What were the chances that she'd actually meant to say 'Kokan'? After all, mispronouncing words was a given, even if it was your native language. "Koken perhaps?" He offered kindly, his eyes holding no jeering that most others would when catching someone make such an embarrassing mistake.
Not wanting to let her dwell on her mistake for long, he quickly, for him anyway, passed over the subject to something else. "Hnm. Morinozuka Takashi. Pleasure to meet you.' He held out his hand, already used to Haruhi's 'lack of manners'. That and he wasn't really one to be bothered by how people talked or went about things. It was their character that interested him. Who they were, how they done things and why. He couldn't judge people over suchsuperficial things as lineage, upbringing and looks.

Her lips pursed, but in the end she said nothing. Yet if it was part of his personality, he didn't really need to apologize. He was just being polite. A lot of people were polite around Ouran, Michi pondered. Was there a possibility it could rub off on her? She wouldn't mind if it did. It was neat to see the upper class (kind of like watching animals interact), it was so different and sometimes humorous. And she wanted to be a part of that, or face the next few years alone.
"Huh? ... Kokan?" She had been so deep in thought the short question confused her. Michi gazed at him in confusion until she figured it out, what she previously said. Oh. My. God. She sounded like a pervert and sexual offender, not to mention an idiot! One hand covered her mouth, or else it would have been left agape for fly-catching. The hairs on the back of her neck stood up as her face went white. She was too stunned at her idiocy to say anything until the other introduced himself.
"... Tanaka Michi," she replied emptily, not even noticing the hand offering. Perhaps the 'her' in the past, before the car accident and memory loss, had also been stupid? Though she didn't know much about herself, she was sure she had been and still could be a humble and well-rounded being. So much for that. She forced herself out of her shock and shook his hand limply with a weak smile. "Thank you for helping me... and I'm sorry. I'm really very sorry."

He was about to take his hand back, thinking he may have been a bit too forward, knowing most Japanese wasn't used to such contact when meeting something, when her small hand grasped his in a weak shake. Takashi gave her a small smile, letting her know that the apology was not needed. He'd noticed she seemed kind of out of it, as if she wasn't really here, paying attention to the moment at hand.
"Which part do you need help for?" He tapped the book with mild interest, science wasn't his best subject, but he never really had trouble with it. If he did, there wouldn't have been much point in him offering her his help. He scooted his chair more under the table, grabbing a pen and a discarded piece of paper and he placed them in front of him, for when he needed to explain things. Looking around him at the pile of books, he ran a finger down the spines, reading the titles in his mind as he pulled a few out. It was handy that the girl had already grabbed all the necessary books, even if it meant that people who may need them would first have to find her.
Although, the library probably had at least 3 copies of each book. Either way, he at least had his algebra book and he'd just have to put all the others back when they were done with them. That seemed fair enough, he nodded to himself.
